Sample Plates for Direct Current Heating
- Fast Heating: Capable of heating samples up to ~1300°C within minutes.
- Isolated Sample: The sample remains electrically separated from the sample plate. grounded plate versions are available.
- Compact Heater: Forms a very compact, but powerful heating unit with the direct current receiver stage.
What is Direct Current Heating?
For applications like preparing semiconductor surfaces for instance, the best and most simple way is usually direct current heating. The sample is heated quickly and efficiently by driving a current through the sample itself.
The heating contacts are mounted to a flag style sample plate, which remains electrically insulated from the sample.
Typical Applications
Ferrovac Direct Current Heating Units are commonly used in applications like the following:
- Semiconductor Preparation: The fast and direct sample heating is ideal for preparing semiconductor surfaces, like the Si 7x7 reconstruction.
- Spectroscopy: For spectroscopy and STM experiments, direct heating is a valid option, especially when using the sample plate version that includes a grounding contact.
- And much more…

Sample Plate Versions:
RECOMDC - Standard DC Heating Plate: Electrical contact rails are completely isolated from the sampl eplate by four Al203 washers.
RECOMDC(N) - Grounded DC Heating Plate: One of the four insulator washers is replaced with metallic (Mo) spacers, permanently grounding the sample.
Rear Access Option 'RA': This sample plate option includes a bore in the sample plate for unobstructed rear access. This option is available for both the standard and the grounded versions.
Receiver Requirement:
To fully form a direct current heating unity, a compatible receiver, like the Direct Current Heating Receiver (Product Code: RECOMDC) is necessary.
The sample plate can also be parked in conventional drawer-style sample receivers, like the standard Ferrovac receiver (Product code: RECOM).
